This Desk Setup Tour features Alexander Sandberg. An ios Engineer with a web development & product design background.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I'm a product-minded iOS/macOS Engineer with a background in web development and product design. Originally from Sweden, but now based in Austria. I work as a Senior iOS Engineer at composer by day, and build carefully crafted indie apps by night, like my latest app Balance.
Can you describe the main components of your desk setup?
The desk is a custom-ordered sit/stand desk from Modulor, with an added desk drawer. The monitor is an Apple Studio Display on an Ergotron LX arm. Thanks to this, and keeping my laptop in the desk drawer, my setup is very clean—which is very important to me. I use a Herman Miller Aeron chair, but I try to stand at my desk as much as possible.
What are the must-have tools or gadgets on your desk that you can't work without?
Apart from the obvious, I really love the plant on my desk, which was a gift from my girlfriend. It really brings the setup together well, and it's nice having some greenery next to me while I work.
How have you personalized your desk to make it uniquely yours?
The wooden animals by Kay Bojesen add a nice personalized touch. I have a few different ones around my home that I rotate once in a while.
What inspires your desk setup?
Simplicity, to make room for focus.
Do you have any favorite design elements or color schemes?
I love Japandi—a combination of Scandinavian and Japanese design—and take a lot of inspiration from there.
How has your desk setup evolved over time, and what prompted those changes?
I've had many different setups over the years, and a general trend has been to simplify. For instance, I used to have 3 monitors, but now I'm down to 1. Simplifying my desk (and my home) has helped me focus on the things that really matter.
Are there any future upgrades or modifications you're considering?
I've never been as satisfied with one of my setups as I am with this one, so I will likely just make smaller changes going forward. It feels very good to have found "the one" for me.
If there were no limitations, what would be your dream addition to your desk setup?
Nothing, actually—which is something I'm grateful for.
What is your favourite item(s)?
Except for the plant and the wooden animals that I've already mentioned, nothing really stands out from the rest. I've reduced my setup to the point where I like everything that goes into it.
Any final words before you go?
Don't forget about ergonomics—your future self will thank you!
